On Friday 5 June 2026, members of the Mary Erskine Former Pupils' Guild gathered at Greyfriars Kirk to remember and honour the legacy of Mary Erskine, founder of the Merchant Maiden Hospital and the woman whose vision ultimately led to the creation of The Mary Erskine School.
The event brought together Guild members and representatives of the wider school community for a simple but meaningful act of remembrance at Mary Erskine's memorial. A wreath in the school colours was laid in tribute, recognising the lasting impact of her commitment to education and opportunity for generations of girls and young women.
Susie Marshall, Vice Captain of The Mary Erskine School, had the honour of presenting the wreath on behalf of the school community, symbolising the connection between Mary Erskine's legacy and the pupils who continue to benefit from it today. As part of the remembrance, each guest received a sprig of herbs similar to those once grown by Mary Erskine, creating a personal connection to the woman whose vision has shaped generations of pupils.
The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on more than three centuries of history and achievement while celebrating the enduring values that Mary Erskine established. As the Guild approaches the conclusion of its own chapter, the event was a particularly poignant reminder of the shared heritage, friendships and traditions that continue to unite former pupils across generations.
The Guild extends its thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the occasion such a fitting tribute to an extraordinary woman whose vision and generosity continue to inspire today.
